They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and since we happen to think that windows are prettiest when they’re big and bright, we love big eyes! Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with doe eyes and so we have to rely on the power of makeup to give us the desired effect. Not to fear, though, we have some pretty easy makeup tips that any makeup novice can pull off to make your eyes look absolutely huge!
Get Off to the Right Start
Before you start applying your eye makeup, it’s crucial to start with a blank and primed canvas. Make sure your eyes aren’t puffy or dark. Apply an ice pack to your eyes for a few minutes if they’re puffy then apply an oil-free primer to the outer corners. If you have dark circles, apply a good concealer because darkness can make your eyes look smaller! Try a shade that’s slightly lighter than your skin tone to help brighten your under-eye area.
Curl Your Lashes
This is possibly the biggest secret to making your eyes look bigger so don’t shy away from it! Take an extra minute to curl your lashes before you put on your mascara and it will transform your entire face! Simply crimp and hold for 20 seconds on each side, then repeat. Bonus secret: applying a waterproof mascara will hold the curl better and longer since it dries quicker.
Coat Those Beauties
Now that you have your lashes curled to perfection (if you skipped #2, stop right now and go back!) it’s time to put on your mascara. Start by wiggling the mascara wand at the base of your eyelashes to separate and coat each strand and then roll the brush up to the tips. Repeat several times until they’re as thick and dark as you want them. Don’t forget your bottom lash line! One swipe is usually enough for the smaller lashes, but it makes all the difference!
One trick that many makeup artists swear by is to apply a light liner to the bottom lid or waterline. A beige or white liner usually does the trick by making the eyes of your white look bigger by blending the line between your eye and your lid. Another way to brighten your eyes is to apply white shadow to the inner corner of your eyes. A light dusting is enough, don’t overdo it!
Line it Up
Eyeliner and shadow make up the final trick. Start at the midpoint of your eye and draw a line that gets thicker towards the outer corner then smudge or blend the line slightly. Next, use a medium to dark shade of shadow to create a “V” in the outer corners extending from your crease to the corner of your eye. This trick opens up your eyes and makes them appear wider.
Do these 5 tricks and you’ll look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed even if you’re running on precious little sleep! We could all use an extra pick-me-up in the mornings especially if your big event is coming up!
